Mexico’s president mocks Trump and suggests changing the name of the United States to “Mexican America”

Mexico’s president lashed out at Donald Trump on Wednesday, saying the United States should be called “Mexican America” after Trump vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of the Americas.”

At her regular morning press conference, Claudia Scheinbaum showed a 17th-century world map showing North America as “Mexican America.”

She pointed out that the Gulf of Mexico is a name recognized by the United Nations and contradicted Trump, saying, “Why don’t we call it (U.S.) Mexican America?”

“Sounds good, doesn’t it?”

“He talked about names and we talked about names,” she said, while assuring that she hoped to have a “good relationship” with the incoming US president.

Trump, who will be sworn in on January 20, said on Tuesday he planned to rename the Gulf of Mexico “the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring.”

“This is appropriate. Mexico must stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country,” he said.

He also claimed that Mexico was run by drug cartels, to which Sheinbaum responded that “in Mexico, the people rule.”

Before returning to office, Trump repeatedly lashed out at Mexico, threatening to impose steep tariffs on imports from one of the United States’ largest trading partners unless the country stops illegal immigration and the flow of drugs across the border.

He also renewed his threat to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
