President Joe Biden declared Thursday, January 9, a national day of mourning following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.

Biden said flags at the White House and all public buildings and grounds will be flown at half-mast for 30 days from the date of his death. He called on Americans to gather “in their respective places of worship” on January 9 to pay tribute to Carter.

“I invite those around the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn commemoration,” Biden said in a statement after Carter’s death.

Federal offices and stock markets have been closed on previous national days of mourning, such as after the deaths of former Presidents George HW Bush in 2018 and Gerald Ford in 2006
