For years, Meta’s platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have hired reporters from PolitiFact and other outlets to fact-check and provide context for posts shared there.

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, told Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday that Meta turned to “independent third-party fact-checking organizations” such as PolitiFact but has since realized they were too bias. PolitiFact has long withstood accusations that its articles lean left.

“It’s clear there’s so much political bias in what they choose to fact-check because basically they can fact-check anything they see on the platform,” Kaplan said Tuesday.

As Zuckerberg claims in the video, Kaplan said Meta is “completely” ending the fact-checking program and replacing it with a “community annotation” model similar to the one used on X, where regular accounts can provide context and fact-checking for : post.

“Instead of going to some so-called expert, it relies on the community and people on the platform to provide their own commentary on things they’ve read,” Kaplan added.

“The decision to remove independent journalists from Facebook’s content moderation program in the U.S. has nothing to do with free speech or censorship,” Shahrockman fumed. “Mark Zuckerberg’s decision could not be more subtle.”

He rebutted Zuckerberg’s accusations of political bias, saying the entity that actually reviewed the posts was Meta’s platform, not the fact-checking agency.

“Let me be clear: The decision to remove or punish a post or account is made by Meta and Facebook, not by fact-checkers. They set the rules,” Sharockman said.

Elsewhere, he argued that Meta should create a space on its platform where independent fact-checkers can “provide additional information and narrative to users who want to understand the full context behind a post.”

“You can view all of our work online at politifact.com,” he added. “We don’t use anonymous sources, we provide some kind of bibliography for all the information we consult. When we make mistakes, there is a process to correct those mistakes. And there is a process to ensure that Facebook and Meta receive the corrected information .”

He added in the statement’s caption, “@PolitiFact would have more to say about this. But these are my thoughts. This decision has nothing to do with free speech or censorship. (PolitiFact is an original partner and has been working on ) has been working on this project for more than 8 years).
