‘Friends’ star David Schwimmer recalls ‘scary’ moment during live taping of hospitalized co-star

David Schwimmer has recalled a “truly scary” moment during a live taping of hit show Friends.
Schwimmer, 58, revealed that his partner Matt LeBlanc was taken to the hospital with a medical emergency.
“During the live recording of the program, [Matt LeBlanc] Schwimmer told Entertainment Weekly that he turned pale and then he stood up and I could see his shoulder was dislocated. He looked like he was about to pass out.
He recalled, “He immediately turned to the camera and was like, ‘Cut, cut, cut.’ It was really scary,” the actor noted. “You could see how badly he was hurt. Obviously, we had to stop filming that night and he went to the hospital.”
“This is terrible,” he stressed.

News of James’ injury on set first came to light during the Friends reunion on HBO Max. The cast was filming “The Place No One Prepared” when James dislocated his shoulder. In the episode, LeBlanc’s Joey competes with Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing for a chair in the apartment while waiting for the girls to get ready.
He had successfully filmed three shots of him jumping on the chair, but they opted to film a fourth.
“I was trying to jump over the coffee table and somehow I tripped,” he explained. “My legs were up in the air and my shoulders were out of their sockets.”
LeBron’s injury ended up being written into “The One With the Jam.”
“We built that into the show and then waited until he recovered before going back to film the finale of ‘Unprepared,'” said executive producer Kevin Bright. “It was easiest in the beginning. The Friends episode ended up taking the longest to film.”

Schwimmer and LeBlanc starred in Friends alongside Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox and the late Matthew Perry. When the show’s first season was filmed, each cast member was between the ages of 25 and 31.
The group has remained close over the years, especially last year after Perry’s death. Fox Digital News previously confirmed that the actor died on October 28, 2023, from “the acute effects of ketamine” and subsequent drowning.
The sitcom, which premiered on September 22, 1994, tells the story of six friends living in New York City. “Friends” was an instant hit and ran for 10 seasons.

During an “Actors on Actors” conversation in June, Aniston reflected on the day “Friends” premiered.
“It’s weird to think that it’s 30 years old because it’s actually – I remember the day it was going to premiere on NBC,” Aniston explained.
“Matthew Perry and I were having lunch somewhere and we knew Lisa was dying her hair. So, we ran into the salon and I snuck over and she was in the sink…I picked up the nozzle and started washing her hair. Hair fell out of the person who was supposed to be doing it and it definitely got out of control which was unfortunate.

“But we are excited and it feels like yesterday,” she added. “The fact that it had such a long, beautiful life and still means so much to people is one of the greatest gifts that I think all of us… the six of us – we could have never imagined.”
