University of Georgia student ‘seriously injured’ in New Orleans attack before Sugar Bowl

Just after 3 a.m. local time on New Year’s Day, a driver drove a pickup truck through a crowd of people on Bourbon Street. The student, who has not yet been identified, was “seriously injured.”

“At this time, we understand that a University of Georgia student was seriously injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment. I have spoken with the student’s family and on behalf of the entire University of Georgia community, I would like to express my concern, support, and best wishes. I Thank you to all the first responders who acted quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical staff who are caring for the injured.

Police identified the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who was pronounced dead at the scene after an exchange of gunfire with local law enforcement. The FBI is working to determine “the suspect’s potential ties and ties to the terrorist organization” after an Islamic State flag was found on the truck. Weapons and potential improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect’s car, and other potential improvised explosive devices were found in the French Quarter.
The FBI said Wednesday it did not believe Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was “fully responsible” for acts of terrorism.
