California woman arrested after 27 horses found dead on multiple properties

A California woman is facing charges after 27 dead horses were found on multiple properties outside of Sacramento, police said.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office announced late Wednesday that law enforcement made the discoveries in Clements while executing a search warrant related to an “ongoing animal neglect investigation.”

“During the operation, we found several malnourished horses at the site without access to any food or water, and approximately 27 dead horses were found,” the statement said.

“Our animal services officers and veterinarians on scene immediately began triaging and evaluating the horses,” police added. “After a thorough evaluation, 16 horses were rescued and are currently in the care of Oakdale Equine Rescue Center professionals who Will ensure they receive proper nutrition, medical care and rehabilitation.

Police also said: “Unfortunately, four horses and a bull had to be euthanized due to extreme neglect.”

Jane Johnson of Clements was arrested and booked into the San Joaquin County Jail.

Investigators said she faces charges of animal cruelty, threatening a public official, criminal threats and possession of a short-barreled shotgun.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office released an image showing at least one malnourished horse found in Clements on Wednesday.
