Will it snow in Northwest Florida early next week? It will be cold enough. this is opportunity

NICSVILLE — A strong cold front is expected to move through Northwest Florida over the weekend, with severe storms, cold temperatures and wintry precipitation possible early next week.

In a memo from Okaloosa County Public Safety Director Patrick Maddox, officials expressed concern about the potential for winter precipitation Tuesday into Wednesday. The National Weather Service defines winter precipitation as snow, sleet or freezing rain.

“Confidence overall is low given that this is still nearly a week away and there are still many unknowns,” Maddox wrote.

Here’s what you need to know.

storm potential

  • What: A few strong storms with gusty winds.

  • when: Saturday morning.

  • Where: The area southeast of I-65 and the western Florida Panhandle.

  • confidence: Low. While wind shear is expected to be strong, there is uncertainty about the level of instability needed to support a severe storm. If instability increases, an isolated severe storm cannot be ruled out.

The wind is biting ahead

  • What: Arctic air mass will stabilize over the region, with low temperatures dropping into the 20s Monday through Wednesday morning. Temperatures could reach the teens inland, with wind chills possibly dropping into the single digits.

  • when: Sunday to Wednesday.

Are you saying there is still a chance?

  • What: Colder weather may affect the region, but details remain uncertain. There are two possible situations:

  1. A surface low pressure develops in the central Gulf, spreading precipitation across the region and potentially causing widespread winter weather.

  2. The low pressure did not form or formed too far away, leaving the area dry but still experiencing freezing conditions.

  • when: Tuesday to Wednesday.

  • confidence: Low. Maddox said further guidance is needed to determine the likelihood and extent of the threat.
